The Enchanting Valleys of Northern Pakistan, Gilgit Baltistan Travel Guide
Northern Pakistan boasts some of the most breathtaking valleys that are almost impossible to put into words. Lush and verdant landscapes, crystal-clear lakes, waterfalls cascading from the heavens, and towering mountains – these are the treasures that define the beauty of the northern regions of Pakistan. However, it's unfortunate that while these regions are brimming with such natural splendors, they don't often receive the recognition they truly deserve. We often hear about foreign destinations more than we do about the scenic gems in our own backyard.
In this blog, we will explore one such
remarkable place, a haven for nature lovers, a place known as " Broghil valley" – a hidden paradise nestled among the peaks and valleys of the
Badakhshan region in Afghanistan, bordering Chitral. Broghil is located about
250 kilometers away from Chitral town, and reaching this remote destination
requires a grueling journey through rugged terrain and mountainous landscapes.
At an elevation of 13,600 feet above sea
level, the Broghil Valley is a secluded enclave surrounded by the
Gilgit Baltistan region. It's a place that, until recently, remained hidden
from the eyes of tourists. However, every year, a unique event, the Broghil
Festival, takes place, where the world's only Yak Polo matches are played.
Remarkably, the festival hadn't received the attention it deserved, despite
being a one-of-a-kind event on the global stage.
Yak Polo, known as "Shandur Polo" in
the local dialect, is a traditional sport played at this festival. In 2010, the
Khyber Pakhtunkhwa government established the Broghil National Park to
facilitate the festivities. It's important to note that this year, the
Department of Tourism played a pivotal role in promoting and organizing the
Broghil Festival, making it not only a local but also an international
attraction.
The Broghil Festival, which lasts for two
days and involves intense sporting competitions such as Yak Polo, goat herding,
donkey polo, tug-of-war, and Yak races, creates a vibrant tent city for its
visitors. Local inhabitants, along with tourists and competitors, throng to
this picturesque valley, taking part in various thrilling competitions.
However, the most awe-inspiring feature of
Broghil is its jewel, the Karambar Lake. Situated at a staggering height of
14,121 feet above sea level, it is the second highest lake in Pakistan and the
31st highest lake in the world. Once the Broghil Festival concludes, the area
becomes a sanctuary for mountain wildlife, with its lush surroundings becoming the
home of numerous bird species and an exceptional variety of flora.
The annual migration of Siberian birds to the
lake adds to the enchantment of this breathtaking valley. Additionally, the
region is renowned for its abundant medicinal plants and herbs. A local claim
states that the grasses growing here can be found nowhere else in the world.
Baroghil Valley is a
place that truly lives up to its heavenly reputation. Its stunning natural
beauty, both mental and physical peace it offers, and the gifts of nature it
brings to life go beyond just words. If you ever visit, you'll understand that
Baroghil isn't just any paradise; it's an enchanting realm where nature's charm
nourishes not only your heart and mind but your very soul.
